Last Whit Bank Holiday weekend (2007) saw the first Welsh Scarecrow Weekend, in our villages. It proved to be a great success, enjoyed by people who participated by making scarecrows, and also by those who spent the weekend walking around the villages and looking at the variety of scarecrows entered. People were already planning what their entries would be for 2008, and it will not be without quite a substantial element of competition!
Even people who would hesitate to admit to having any creativitiy within themselves, surprised them selves, with their creations. For me, it demonstrated to everyone that we can all participate in Arts Activities, and Art touches all of our lives, without ever being acknowledged as such.
Since that first event, we have been planning the 2008 event. We learned a lot last year, and know now that we can improve on it, by learning from mistakes we feel we made in 2007.
We have started to raise funds, to enable us to promote the overall event, and also to be able to arrange some entertainment for children, if possible. We held a Race Night in Llwyngwril Gallery, recently. Jean Napier, a local professional photographer, kindly provided the equipment and expertise to show the films, and we raised from Betting, sponsorship and entrance fees, just under £500. CBS in Tywyn, sponsored the event, which meant that anything we made on the night was for the cause. We are very grateful for this generous gesture.
We are planning another evening for in the Spring, date yet to be confirmed.
